At the end of 2019, during the 25th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25), the European Union launched the European Green Deal. The new initiative was created to strengthen industry growth and investment in green energy, eco equipment and materials, energy-saving buildings, low carbon transportation, and other green sectors. To cope with the global economic impact of Covid-19 in 2020 and growing challenges of climate change, various countries launched economic revitalization programs that prioritize the development of green industries. In light of this, the Bureau of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economic Affairs launched the four-year project “Green Product International Market Linkage – Promoting Industry Green Capacities Project”. This project hopes to assist green companies to strengthen their capacity in acquiring green certifications and elevate product competitiveness, promote sustainable solution output to international markets, and enhance the linkage of domestic and international green industry players.

In response to the international goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the European Union and the United States are considering implementing Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM), various countries are also gradually introducing different environmental policies and trade mechanisms such as carbon fees, carbon tariffs, etc. To support Taiwanese companies to respond to the trend of global net zero carbon emissions and reduce the impact on Taiwan’s product exports, the Project established the “Net Zero Carbon Emissions Info Page”, to disseminate low-carbon ideas and new knowledge, and to exchange relevant trade impact information. The Project will also hold various international carbon reduction trend seminars, and prepare a carbon footprint handbook to assist companies in evaluating their carbon footprints, introduce government resources in energy saving and carbon reduction actions, offer consulting services to help obtain international carbon footprint certifications, and assist Taiwanese companies in planning ahead and implement appropriate trade response measures.
