Electric Two-wheeled Vehicles Industry Map

Taiwan’s electric two-wheeled vehicle industry has gradually matured. The industry covers electric-assisted bicycles, electric kick scooters, electric scooters, etc. As Taiwan’s electric two-wheeled vehicle industry has focused on the development of electric scooters in recent years, this industry map elaborates primarily on the key structure of the electric scooter industry.

The electric scooter industry consists of the following segments: upstream – materials, upstream – components, midstream – components and module assemblies, and downstream – system integration and whole electric scooter manufacturers. After years of development, the local content rate of whole vehicles has topped 90%, leading to a gradual shift from domestic market sales to international expansion and collaboration. Most scooter component suppliers in Taiwan are based in whole vehicle manufacturers’ place of manufacture to not only facilitate supply chain collaboration, and reduce production and transportation costs, but also help explore new markets and quickly respond to the needs of the manufacturers, thereby boosting industrial competitiveness. There is a strong clustering effect in Taiwan with a small territory. As a result, the main scooter clusters are concentrated in Taoyuan and Hsinchu in Northern Taiwan, Taichung and Changhua in Central Taiwan, and Tainan and Kaohsiung in Southern Taiwan.

The electric scooter industry in Taiwan is oriented towards commercial applications, inter-industry and cross-industry partnerships, and production collaboration. Instead of centering all efforts on marketing electric scooters, the electric scooter manufacturers branch out into open applications for energy platforms. In addition to offering related vehicle manufacturers or operators standardized batteries and battery swapping stations to make the market more accessible, the electric scooter manufacturers also play a key role in providing backup power in a timely manner in smart traffic and smart city contexts. For example, Gogoro, a leading manufacturer, uses the PBNG (Powered by Gogoro Network) open energy platform to develop its B2C and B2B businesses, breaking into the international commercial and logistics markets through convenient battery swapping models, and DHL, Gojek, Zypp and Bikebank are its major customers. Gogoro also extends the use of smart batteries to smart parking bollards and traffic signals with UPS systems, making the most out of their unique advantages of energy storage and two-way feed.

Given the trend towards net zero emissions, Gogoro has teamed up with ProLogium Technology in the R&D of swappable solid-state batteries that can help increase energy density and charging efficiency. Furthermore, Gogoro also uses secondary batteries to assemble automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in its production lines, and applied them in smart city scenarios to achieve true environmental protection and sustainability with a circular economy. In an effort to enhance their international competitiveness, Taiwanese electric scooter manufacturers continuously improve their product quality and safety, and equip their electric scooters with connectivity features to develop more smart functions. For instance, the CROXERA Safety Internet-of-Vehicle Alliance formed by Aeonmotor satisfies the needs of electric scooter manufacturers, operators and users. As another example, KYMCO has formed the “Ionex EV League” to collaborate with Chinese startup electric scooter manufacturers Super SOCO and FELO, as well as Harley Davidson based in the United States, in developing electric scooters through the Ionex 3.0 open energy platform, building international partnerships with the combination of the battery swapping system and the commercial manufacturing model. In the future, targeting key countries and specific cities and customer segments, tailoring product design, commercial models and R&D strategies to local policies and needs, and maximizing industrial benefits through alliance and collaboration will be advantageous for creating added value for the overall electric scooter value chain.
